We know many of our guests will be spending a couple of days. Here are a few of our recommendations in and around Exeter if you have any spare time:
Things to do
Exeter Quay for a river view and a variety of food and drink options. Bicycle and Boat hire is available. From the Quay you can walk or cycle along the river towards Dawlish. The Quay is a short walk from the city centre.
Topsham for estuary views, nice shops, excellent pubs, birdwatching and antiques. From the city centre, you can get to Topsham via a short journey on the no.57 bus from the bus station, or on the Exmouth train from Exeter central.
Exmouth for a nice sandy beach, a swim, or a walk along the cliffs at Orcombe point. Also home to the famous Krispies Fish and Chips. You can get to Exmouth via the no.57 bus, or by train from Exeter Central.
Budleigh Salterton is a pretty seaside town and Lydia and her Dad’s favourite swimming beach. (Beware there is steep drop and a current). Crab sandwiches available on the beach.
Dartmoor is a must for walkers. Hay Tor is the most famous landmark. Our favourite places to visit are Lustleigh and Grimspound. For those without a car, you can get the train to Okehampton and there are walks starting from the town.
Shopping in Exeter I recommend Fore Street, Magdalen Road, Gandy Street, Cowick Street.

Topsham Brewery (located at the Quay, Exeter) for beer, cider, and Pizza. A short walk from the Hall.
The Ship Inn (just off the Cathedral Green) for Francis Drake’s favourite Exeter pub (apparently..)
The Bridge Inn (Topsham) for cider, in particular.
The Double Locks (Countess Wear) for a canal side pub. Excellent destination for a boat trip from the Quay.
The Turf Inn (Exeter) for a estuary view. Most easily accessible by walking/cycling from Exeter or ferry from Topsham.

The Boatyard Bakery (Exeter Quay), The Ridge (also near the Quay) for coffee and baked goods.
Portal Pizza (three locations in Exeter) for Pizza. Also available at Topsham Brewery.
